york to break down the numbers from the u.s. census bureau. carter? >> reporter: so get this. here is the number of americans who own their homes. it is 66.9% right now. that is the lowest number since 1999. the paeg was 69.2% in 2004. doesn't sound like a big difference percentagewise but that's millions and millions of homes. that was the housing boom in 2004. remember that? money was cheap and easy to get. now everybody is unemployed. they can't pay their bills. homes are getting foreclosed on. and they are flooding the market. nearly 19 million homes were vacant in the second quarter. this counts homes for sale and, if foreclosures. many people are coping by moving in with family or renting. expiration of first time home buyer is hurting. second lowest pace on record. home prices are back where they were in 2003. the bottom line right now is that homeownership is not guaranteed very many it once was. during the housing boom, many people were looking at their home primarily as an investment. not a place that they were going to live for 30 years or more. i think that perspective

else, the largest leak of wartime documents in this country since the vietnam war. more than 90,000 u.s. government documents obtained and posted by the website wikileaks over the weekend. the last time there was a leak of this volume, it precipitated a full-on war between the "new york times" and the nixon white house. it was, of course, the leaking of the pentagon papers during the vietnam war by u.s. military analyst named daniel elsburg back in 1971. the pentagon papers was a touch stone that helped turn the public against vietnam war. the 90,000 plus documents posted by kwikileaks are different than the pentagon papers in that they're snap shots of the war over the last six years, as opposed a top-down study initiated in washington. the wikileaks documents are raw intelligence, threat analysis as seen through the eyes of the soldier fighting the war. as opposed an analytical view of the war from policymakers. in that sense wikileaks is no pentagon papers, but there is a glaring pair lil lel between the two that can't be ignored. these wikileaks documents have been notable in that t

're looking at the u.s. coast guard cutter "resolute." that ship was our ride out here. it took us overnight coming from pensacola. but now we've arrived at our destination behind us here is the very spot where the deepwater horizon rig caught fire, sank to the bottom of the ocean and started that huge environmental and economic disaster. and this is a critical time. one mile beneath my feet, testing is under way that could lead to capping the well. these images of the oil spewing into the gulf may soon be just a bad memory. but you wouldn't know it by what you see on the surface. just some quick observations of what we see out here, it looks like a small city of vessels, about 10 or 20 large ships out there, two of them clearly producing oil, pumping it up from below. that's where we see the large flames erupting as they burn off the natural gas that comes up. i asked our coast guard escort to go in for a closer look. i wanted to see if there was anything going on that might show this catastrophe is turning a corner. but this was as close as we could go. we're about a mile away right now. w

of the biggest leaks in u.s. military history. nearly 92,000 secret documents were released by the whistle blower website wikileaks. most of them field reports covering the years 2004 through 2009. the trove was given first to three international news outlets, each of which spent weeks researching the findings. all three concluded that the documents were real, even if the intelligence they provided didn't always pan out. what the leaked documents show isn't completely new information to anyone who has been paying close attention to the conflict, but they do supply a new level of detail to points war critics have been making for years. for example, it is not news that afghan civilians have been killed in the crossfire, but until this leak we did not know that more civilians had been killed by secret special forces than the government has acknowledged. it is not news that pakistan appears to have been supporting the taliban, but until now we did not know the explicit details of how the pakistani intelligence service met directly with taliban leaders and helped them plan attacks against allied force
